Creatinine is a by-product produced during the metabolism of creatine phosphate in muscle. It is excreted through urine, and serum creatinine level is most common indicator of renal health.

Creatinine may be used as a pharmaceutical reference standard for the determination of the analyte in biological fluids by spectrophotometry, and high performance liquid chromatography.
These Secondary Standards are qualified as Certified Reference Materials.
