General description

The gene BAD (Bcl2-associated agonist of cell death) is mapped to human chromosome 11q13.1. It belongs to the Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2) family of proteins. The protein has a BH3 domain.

Application

Biochem/physiol Actions

BAD (Bcl2-associated agonist of cell death) controls apoptosis by associating with anti-apoptotic proteins. Phosphorylated BAD interacts with Bcl-xL (B-cell lymphoma-extra large) and Bcl-2 (B-cell lymphoma 2), leading to apoptosis. On the other hand, non-phosphorylated form is not able to heterodimerize. BAD-mediated cell death influences cancer development and progression.
