Allgemeine Beschreibung

Research area: Cell signaling. The gene LCN2 (lipocalin 2) is mapped to human chromosome 9q34.[1] LCN2, a secreted glycoprotein, is an adipokine.[2][3] It is expressed by many cells, such as respiratory and intestinal epithelial cells, endothelial cells, renal tubular cells, and cardiomyocytes. LCN2 belongs to the lipocalin family.[4] LCN2 consists of the lipid binding domain that binds to small hydrophobic molecules and the ligand binding cavity that binds to bacterial and mammalian proteins called siderophores.[5]

Anwendung

LCN2 (lipocalin 2)-human has been used in the cell proliferation assay.[6]It has also been used in conductometric immunoassay in renal carcinoma cells.[7]

Biochem./physiol. Wirkung

LCN2 (lipocalin 2) potentially connects obesity and its related adipose inflammation.[2][3] LCN2 has also been implicated in a variety of processes including cell differentiation, tumorigenesis, and apoptosis.[4] It is an early marker of acute kidney injury, cardiovascular diseases, lupus nephritis, and intestinal inflammation.[5] LCN2 is upregulated in humans with heart failure.[4] It can associate with MMP9 (matrix metalloproteinase-9) and controls its stability.[8][2] Changes in the expression of LCN2 are associated with many cancers, including breast, colorectal, pancreatic, ovarian, gastric, thyroid, ovarian, bladder, and kidney cancers.[2]LCN2 acts as a pleiotropicmolecule and plays a role in several pathophysiological and physiologicalactivities including immune response, inflammation, metabolic homeostasis, andinfection.[5]
