General description

Citric acid monohydrate is an organic acid. Its molar enthalpy of solution in water has been reported to be ΔsolHm (298.15K, m = 0.0203molkg-1) = (29061±123)Jmol-1. It can be produced by crystallization from mother liquor of citric acid solution at 20-25°C during citric acid synthesis. An investigation of its crystal growth kinetics indicates that growth is linearly dependent on size.

Citric acid monohydrate is an organic weak acid used as a natural preservative in food and beverage products.

Application

Citric acid monohydrate was used in the preparation of citric acid solution employed in the acetone method of 68Ga pre-purification and radiolabeling technique.[1]
It may be used:
  • As release-modifying agent to improve the release of diltiazem hydrochloride from melt extruded Eudragit RS PO tablets.[2]
  • To prepare citrate buffer for use in the preparation of platelets for intravital microscopy.[3]
  • To prepare Tris-citrate buffer employed for the electrophoresis of bacterial enzymes.[4]

Questions

1–3 of 3 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. I need to prepare 100 ml of 1 molar citric acid solution. How do I prepare this and which product do I need to buy?

    1 answer
    1. The volume of 100 mL is equivalent to 0.1 Liters. And 1 molar (1 mole per liter) times 0.1 liters equals 0.1 moles. The molecular weight for Citric Acid Monohydrate is 210.14 grams per mole. And 0.1 moles times 210.14 grams per mole equals 21.0 grams. So to prepare the solution, dissolve 21.0 grams of citric acid monohydrate in about 75 mL of pure water, then bring the final volume to 100 mL. Citric Acid Monohydrate is very soluble in water.
As far as which product to buy, many grades of citric acid and citric acid monohydrate are listed. Please contact your local Technical Service group and describe your intended application so that they can help you choose the appropriate grade.

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf
