Descrição geral

Sodium butyrate is the sodium salt form of butyric acid. It is a a natural compound known to inhibit tumor-cell growth and its biological activity in a human breast-cancer cell line (MCF7) was investigated.[1] Sodium butyrate may be an effective drug for the treatment of human spinal muscular atrophy patients.[2]

Sodium butyrate, an aliphatic sodium salt, serves as an acylating reagent for phenols.[3]

Aplicação

Sodium butyrate can be used as a reactant to prepare butanal by reduction using 9-borabicyclo[3.3.1]nonane (9-BBN) in THF.[4] It is also converted into butanal borane and pyridinium chlorochromate by the reductive oxidation reaction.[5] Sodium butyrate is reacted with different alcohols to yield esters by Mitsunobu reaction using ionic liquid-based chloroiminium reagent.[6]

Questions

1–3 of 3 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  3. What is the expected solubility in water?

    1 answer
    1. This product is soluble in water (0.1 g/ml), DMSO (<1 mg/ml), ethanol (~5 mg/ml), and PBS pH7. 2 (~10 mg/ml).

Solubility problems with latest batch of sodium butyrate

I had good experience with Sigma's sodium butyrate during the past few years but ran into solubility problems with the latest batch, BCCG8857. The newer batch has some sort of insoluble chemical mixed in with the sodium butyrate - possibly some caking/anti-caking regent?

In the past, I have been able to consistently dissolve 300 mg/mL of sodium butyrate in water or PBS with outstanding results - the solution was perfectly clear and there are no signs of particles. With batch BCCG8857, there are numerous white insoluble particles even when dissolving the sodium butyrate at 60 mg /mL in water. The white insoluble particles tend to adhere near the surface after centrifugation and pellets on the side of the microcentrifuge tube rather than the bottom.

Purchase the smaller sized bottles first to test the lot before making a bigger purchase (I was told there are no other/replacement lots until they go through most of the BCCG8857 lot).

    Not dissolving in water

BCCG8857 batch is not dissolving in water. It has to be a batch problem because I've used this concentration (16 g/L) before without any issues.

    1. Response from MilliporeSigma:

Solubility is not part of the specification for product 303410, it is not tested during quality control. However, due to a number of similar reports an investigation of lot BCCG8857 was performed and the remainder of the lot was removed from inventory.
