Application

Dimethyl sulfoxide has been used:
  • for the dissolution of tetramethylrhodamine dye, which is used as fluorophore for fluorescence in- situ hybridization (FISH) experiments[1]
  • as a control in indirect immunofluorescent assay (IFA) of swine testicular (ST) cells[2]
  • for the suspension and separation of buccal cells[3]
  • a polar aprotic solvent used in polymerase chain reactions (PCR) and as a cryoprotectant vitrification agent for the preservation of cells, tissues and organs.

Actions biochimiques/physiologiques

Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) is a low molecular weight, less hydrophilic and a freely permeable cryoprotectant.[4] It is a polar aprotic solvent used in polymerase chain reactions (PCR) and as a cryoprotectant and vitrification agent for the preservation of cells, tissues and organs.[5]

Attention

Refroidit facilement et revient doucement à la température de la pièce. Les produits solides peuvent être reliquéfiés par chauffage à la température ambiante sans abîmer le produit.

Questions

1–9 of 9 Questions
  1. DMSO is sensible to light? should I use a amber glass to storage my solution? Thank you.

    1 answer
    1. DMSO is sensitive to light and should be stored in amber or other dark colored containers or wrapped in foil to minimize exposure.

      Helpful?

  2. What is the difference between Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) Products. D1435 and D2438?

    1 answer
    1. Products D1435 and D2438 both meet the USP specifications. The D2438 is sterile-filtered, but D1435 is not. Furthermore, the D2438 is quality control tested for endotoxin and use-tested for cell freezing.

  3. What is the Department of Transportation shipping information for this product?

    1 answer
    1. Transportation information can be found in Section 14 of the product's (M)SDS.To access the shipping information for this material, use the link on the product detail page for the product.

      Helpful?

  4. What is the molarity of DMSO?

    1 answer
    1. DMSO will have a molarity of 14.1M, based on a density of 1.1 g/mL and a molecular weight of 78.13 g/mol.

      Helpful?

  5. Is Dimethyl sulfoxide a sterile product?

    1 answer
    1. No, this product is not considered sterile.  Product Nos. D2560 and D2438 are sterile-filtered.

      Helpful?

  6. Does DMSO have any synthetic utility?

    1 answer
    1. DMSO has been used to oxidize thiols and disulfides to sulfonic acids, hydrolysis of epoxides, thioalkylation of phenols, and oxidation of primary alcohols and halides, and esters of primary alcohols to aldehydes.

      Helpful?

  7. Where does DMSO come from?

    1 answer
    1. DMSO is known to have been isolated from tree bark in the past. It is now a commericially synthesized solvent.

      Helpful?

  8. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO) should be a liquid.  Why did it arrive as a solid?

    1 answer
    1. DMSO supercools easily, and re-melts slowly at room temperature. The melting point is 16-19 °C. The solidified product can be re-liquefied by warming to room temperature without detriment to the product.

      Helpful?

  9. What is the DMSO dissolved in?

    1 answer
    1. DMSO is not dissolved in any solvent. It is a pure chemical compound that is a liquid at room temperature.
