CoCl2 is generally known to replace Fe2+ that binds to prolyl hydroxylase (PHD), which degrades hypoxia-inducible factor‑1α (HIF-1a) under normoxic conditions. This binding blocks the activity of PHD and subsequently upregulates the level of HIF-1a to simulate hypoxic conditions.
