Aplicación
The enzyme plays a critical role in the recycling of inositol to phosphoinositides in the mammalian brain and participates in the phosphatidylinositol signaling pathway. It is inhibited non-competitively by Li+, which may be significant in the treatment of manic depression. The enzyme may help in identifying less toxic substitutes for lithium in manic depressive therapy.

The gene product of the sas2203 ORF of Staphylococcus aureus MSSA476 encodes a 30 kDa molecular-weight protein with a high sequence resemblance (29% identity) to tetrameric inositol monophosphatase from Thermotoga maritima. The protein was cloned, expressed, purified to homogeneity and crystallized.

The inositol monophosphatase (IMPase) enzyme from the hyperthermophilic archaeon Methanocaldococcus jannaschii requires Mg(2+) for activity and binds three to four ions tightly in the absence of ligands: K(D) = 0.8 muM for one ion with a K(D) of 38 muM

Lithium chloride (LiCl) inhibits inositol monophosphatase (IMPase) at therapeutic concentrations. Given that LiCl induces death in cultured macrophages and that macrophages play an active role in atherosclerotic plaque destabilization, we investigated whether LiCl would induce selective macrophage death to stabilize
