Questions

1–7 of 7 Questions
  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  2. Would t-BHP be altered if freezed at -20 degrees celsius?

    1 answer
    1. The stability of this product when frozen has not been tested. It is recommended to follow the prescribed storage recommendations.

      Helpful?

  3. Would it alter the potency of the molecule if diluted in cell culture medium (typically MEM and DMEM) then kept at -20 degrees celsius?

    1 answer
    1. The recommended storage temperature for this item is 2-8°C for a 70 wt.% tert-Butyl hydroperoxide solution in water. Storage has not been evaluated after dilution in DMEM or MEM. Solutions at more dilute concentrations can be prepared as needed. A cell viability and an apoptosis assay would need to be performed on a fresh versus stored sample with varying concentrations of tert-butyl hydroperoxide to determine if potency is altered.

      Helpful?

  4. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  5. What does "percent active oxygen" on the COA for product 458139 mean? Shouldn't the specified range (12.25%-12.61%) be higher?

    1 answer
    1. Approximately 70% of product 458139 is tert-Butyl hydroperoxide, and about 35.6% of the tert-Butyl hydroperoxide is oxygen, which might suggest that the oxygen content in the solution is about 24.9%. However, only one of the two oxygen atoms is considered 'active', leading to an active oxygen specification of around 12.4%. This concept is related to the energy content and is used to specify the amount of peroxide present in the formulation.

  6. Is t-BHP also stable at lower concentrations (at 4°C) diluted in H2O, e.g. 1M ? Or would you recommend to always prepare fresh (pre-) dilutions when lower concentrations are needed? Thanks!

    1 answer
    1. Stability studies of dilute solutions have not been performed. To assure optimum quality, it is recommended that further dilutions be prepared fresh and not stored.

      Helpful?

  7. Could you share the molarity of 70% TBHP solution?

    1 answer
    1. The concentration range for this product is 69.0 - 75.0%. With the density of 0.93 g/mL, at 70% the calculated molarity of the product is 7.224.
