General description

Tanshinone IIA (Tan IIA) is a natural diterpene quinone[1], a lipophilic component derived from the root extract of Salvia miltiorrhiza.[2]

Application

Tanshinone IIA has been used:
  • to test its effect on osteoclast differentiation in ovariectomy-induced osteoporosis mouse model[3]
  • to test its effects on microglia and to study its neuroprotective effect on ischemia-reperfusion injured rat brain[4]
  • to study its effects on the proliferation, apoptosis, and autophagy of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) in vitro and in vivo models[5]
  • to investigate its anti-inflammatory and protective effects on ATDC5 cells from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory injury[6]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phenanthrenequinone constituent of Chinese medicinal herb Danshen (Salvia miltiorrhiza). Anti-inflammatory. Antioxidant. Cytotoxic against a variety of cell lines, inlcuding human glioma cells.
Tanshinone IIA provides protective effects against cardiovascular diseases by enhancing angiogenesis.[7] It elicits neuroprotective, anti-cancer, anti-diabetic, and anti-obesity properties.[2] Tan-IIA plays a significant role in modulating the development and function of immune cells.[7]
