Minoxidil has been used as test drug:
- in dermal papilla spheroid model, to study the effect of hair regeneration
- administered orally to experimental rats, in the approach to identify biomarkers of drug induced vascular injury[1]
- administered via oral gavage to nonhuman primate model in order to study its effect on tilt responses
Biochem/physiol Actions
Activates ATP-activated K+ channels; vasodilator; slow or stop hair loss and promote hair regrowth.
Minoxidil is originally used to treat hypertension, which also induces hypertrichosis. It is considered as a potent drug for treating androgenetic alopecia.[2]
