Biochem/physiol Actions
Interleukin-21 (IL-21) is a cytokine that regulates both innate and adaptive immunity. The biological effects of IL-21 are mediated by a heterodimeric receptor made up of IL-21R and a γ chain subunit. IL-21R is expressed in liver, thymus, dendritic cells , lymph nodes and spleen. Binding of IL-21 to the receptor leads to activation of JAK (JAK1 and JAK3), STAT (STAT1, 3, 4 and 5) proteins. IL-21R is important for sustained T cell responses during chronic viral infections, production of interferons against pathogens and protection against tumor formation.
