General description

Formed by the conjugation of cholic acid with glycine. Aggregation number: 2.1.
Glycocholic acid (GCA) is a crystalline secondary bile acid. It is a conjugate of cholic acid and glycine. The microbiota produces GCA in the small intestine by the catalysis of enzymes.[1] Glycocholic Acid, Sodium Salt, an anionic surfactant with a steroidal backbone is soluble in water.[2]Formed by the conjugation of cholic acid with glycine (aggregation number: 2.1; CMC: 7.1 mM; pKa: 3.8).

Application

Glycocholic Acid, Sodium Salt- is suitable for use:

  • as a component in the sodium phosphate/NaCl (phosphate buffer saline-PBS) buffer to prepare protein samples[3]
  • in the preparation of fluorescently labeled mixed micelles to investigate the uptake by and transport through Caco-2 cells of two mixed micelle formulations of vitamin K[4]
  • to prepare mixed micelle solutions to encapsulate a lipid-soluble drug (vitamin K1) to analyze its influence on the quality and stability of the mixed micelle systems[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Glycocholic acid (GCA) is involved in the emulsification of fats.[1] Glycocholic acid sodium (GAS) salt is one of the important cholic acid salts in the pharmaceutical industry used to prepare mixed micelles (MMs).[1]
