General description

Monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG), a galactosylglycerolipid, is a major lipid in the thylakoid membrane of the chloroplast of leaves. It is also localized in the roots, fruits and grains.[1] MGDG is synthesized from Monogalactosyldiacylglycerol synthase 1 (MGD1).[2] It is a precursor for digalactosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG).[3]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Monogalactosyldiacylglycerol (MGDG) plays an important role in biogenesis and integrity of plastids for photosynthesis, as they need a galactolipid-rich environment.[3]
