脂质A分子组成了由革兰氏阴性菌所产生的内毒素的脂膜锚定核心成分。脂质A分子可诱导免疫反应。结构上,脂质A分子由两个物种依赖性、脂肪酰基链数、同一性和磷酸化程度均不同的葡糖胺单元所组成。
来自大肠杆菌F583的单磷酰基脂质A可用于对不同LPA分子和类似物内特定结构的抗原性进行比较性评估。
脂质A具有免疫刺激佐剂活性,包括巨噬细胞、T细胞和B细胞活化。研究表明脂质A对于Th2有比Th1更大的刺激。
