The Human Protein Atlas project can be subdivided into three efforts: Human Tissue Atlas, Cancer Atlas, and Human Cell Atlas. BNIP1 (BCL2/adenovirus E1B 19kDa interacting protein 1) gene encodes a member of the BNIP family. The encoded protein is capable of interacting with the antiapoptotic adenovirus E1B 19-kDa protein. It is a component of a complex containing the SNARE protein, syntaxin 18. BNIP1 functions in the formation of the ER network structure and ER membrane fusion. The BH3 domain of BNIP1 contains a highly conserved leucine residue that has been implicated in apoptosis. It is also involved in the regulation of mitochondrial autophagy, a process that facilitates the recycling of cytoplasmic organelles for cell survival.
