E-64d is an epoxysuccinyl peptide and an inhibitor of cysteine protease cathepsin B,[4] calpains 1 and 2.[5] E-64d by its cathepsin B protease inhibition functionality, may serve as a potential drug for treating traumatic brain injury (TBI)[5] and Alzheimer′s disease (AD).[6] It inhibits gametocyte surface antigen resulting in a decreased oocyst production in Plasmodium falciparum.[7]
