Questions

1–5 of 5 Questions
  1. Can I use a crosslinker the Sylgard 184 curing agent with this PDMS and achieve a crosslinked polymer?

    1 answer
    1. Yes, the Sylgard 184 curing agent can be used with this product to achieve a crosslinked polymer.

      Helpful?

  2. Can this PDMS be made to crosslink using a curing agent. In a similar way to how Sylgard 184 forms an elastomer when the curing agent is used. If so, what curing agent can be used for this PDMS? Does this have a narrower MW distribution than the Sylgard?

    1 answer
    1. Poly(dimethylsiloxane), vinyl terminated, can be crosslinked under the correct reaction conditions. This may involve hydrosilylation using a platinum catalyst, a siloxane crosslinker, and vinyl terminated PDMS. The platinum catalyst used by one researcher is cis-dichlorobis(diethylsulphide) platinum (II) catalyst, which is available as product 767654. The siloxane crosslinker used in the research was tetrakis(dimethylsiloxane), which is not available as a product that we supply. If you would like to read more about one way in which vinyl terminated PDMS has been cross-linked, please see the research article below. One would expect that there are other siloxane crosslinkers and platinum catalysts that can be used for this type of a reaction.

Van, G. de With, Influence of cross-linker concentration on the cross-linking of PDMS and the network structures formed, Polymer, Volume 50, Issue 16, 2009, Pages 3955-3966, ISSN 0032-3861, https://doi.org/10.1016/j.polymer.2009.06.022.

The exact composition of Sylgard 184 is proprietary and not disclosed. The only details available from Dow Safety Data Sheet (SDS) documentation is that the base contains ethylbenzene under CAS 100-41-4 at concentrations between 0.19% and 0.2%. The SDS for the curing agent lists methylvinylcyclosiloxane under CAS 2554-06-5 at concentrations between 1.0% and 3.0%. The molecular weight of the PDMS used in the Dow product is not specified and a comprehensive formulation isn't provided.

  3. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  4. What is the weight of the product 433012-500ML in grams in a 500ml bottle?

    1 answer
    1. The weight of the product 433012-500ML in a 500ml bottle can be estimated by multiplying the volume (500ml) by the density (0.965 g/mL), resulting in an approximate weight of 482.5g in the bottle.

  5. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?
