Fuming sulfuric acid is an inorganic acid, produced by the addition of sulfur trioxide to concentrated sulfuric acid. It is commonly used for sulfonation reactions.1 Surface functionalization of poly (propylene) (PP) films using fuming sulfuric acid has been analyzed using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), attenuated total reflectance (ATR) infrared spectroscopy, and chemical modification. It is reported to assist the bromination of methylpyridines in the pyridine nucleus. Fuming sulfuric acid oxidizes fullerene C60 to form fullerene polymers.
