4-Ethylbenzoic acid was used in the synthesis of ethyl 4-vinyl-α-cyano-β-phenylcinnamate[2]. It was also used to functionalize the edge of “pristine” graphite in the presence of polyphosphoric acid/phosphorus pentoxide[3].
