Application

  • Trichloroacetic acid has been used for the precipitation of sLRP (soluble circulating low density lipoprotein receptor-related protein-1) isolated from plasma.[1]
  • It has been used for the extraction of ascorbic acid from plant samples. It has also been used for the preparation of ascorbate standards for ascorbate assay.[2]
  • It has been used for the precipitation of IMAC (immobilized metal ion affinity chromatography)-isolated phosphoproteins.[3]
Traditionally used to precipitate protein. Has been used to determine protein concentration by quantitative precipitation. Used as decalcifier and fixative in microscopy.

Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. The answer stated 7 month ago says that "A 100% (w/v) solution of TCA can be made by the addition of 227 ml of water to 500 g of TCA." The powder purity being 99%, why wouldn't it be 100g of TCA for 100 mL of water for a 100% w/v solution?

    1 answer
    1. The formula "A 100% (w/v) solution of TCA can be made by the addition of 227 mL of water to 500 g of TCA" is sourced from Molecular Cloning: A Laboratory Manual, 3rd ed., Sambrook, J. F., et al., Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press (Cold Spring Harbor, NY: 2001), p. A1.29.
Solutions should be prepared accurately at any given temperature by weighing into a volumetric flask, dissolving, and then bringing to the specified volume. The Molecular Cloning application may not have required an accurate solution. Volumes prepared using graduated cylinders are less accurate than those prepared using a To Contain class A volumetric flask, even if densities have been established. Unless specifically following the Molecular Cloning paper, it is best to prepare the solution using the established and correct method.

  2. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1 answer
    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers. For more information, please refer to the Storage and Transport Conditions document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/316/622/storage-transport-conditions-mk.pdf

  3. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1 answer
    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.
For more information, please refer to the Product Dating Information document: https://www.sigmaaldrich.com/deepweb/assets/sigmaaldrich/marketing/global/documents/449/386/product-dating-information-mk.pdf

  4. What are the recommended solubility and storage conditions for the trichloroacetic acid (TCA) product with CAS number 76-03-9?

    1 answer
    1. A 100% (w/v) solution of TCA can be made by the addition of 227 ml of water to 500 g of TCA. The resulting clear solution will have a density of approximately 1.45 g/ml. Do not use plastic dishes and containers. Solution storage temperature 2-8 °C
