General description

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a semiconductor based material that consists of a closed packed stacking of double layers of silicon and carbon. It has an excellent thermo-mechanical property that makes it useful in a variety of electronic and optoelectronic applications.[1][2]

Application

SiC is majorly used as a base material for applications such as micro-structures[3], opto-electronic devices(OLEDs), UV detectors[4][5], high temperature electronics (nuclear electronics)[6], high frequency devices[7]

Questions

1–7 of 7 Questions
  1. Is Product 378097, Silicon carbide, alpha- or beta-phase?

    1 answer
    1. According to our supplier, this product has a hexagonal crystal structure (subclass, 6H) and is all alpha-phase.

      Helpful?

  2. How does the storage temperature relate to shipping conditions?

    1 answer
    1. The storage conditions that a Sigma-Aldrich catalog and label recommend for products are deliberately conservative. For many products, long-term storage at low temperatures will increase the time during which they are expected to remain in specification and therefore are labeled accordingly. Where short-term storage, shipping time frame, or exposure to conditions other than those recommended for long-term storage will not affect product quality, Sigma-Aldrich will ship at ambient temperature. The products sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than their recommended long-term storage are shipped on wet or dry ice. Ambient temperature shipping helps to control shipping costs for our customers. At any time, our customers can request wet- or dry-ice shipment, but the special handling is at customer expense if our product history indicates that the product is stable for regular shipment.

  3. The particle size of Product 378097, Silicon carbide, is listed in "mesh". What does this mean?

    1 answer
    1. "Mesh" is a designation that refers to the particle size. It is related to the size screen -or mesh- through which the particles will pass. Product No. 378097 has a particle size of 200-450 mesh, which corresponds to a size of 74μm (200 mesh) to approximately 32μm (450 mesh).

  4. What solvents can I use to dissolve Product 378097, Silicon carbide ?

    1 answer
    1. Unfortunately, Sigma-Aldrich does not test the solubility of this material. Fundamentally, Silicon carbide (SiC) is insoluble in water. However, according to Lange's Handbook of Chemistry (16th ed.), beta-phase SiC is expected to be soluble in fused alkali oxides (e.g. KOH) at a ratio of 1 part per 100 parts. No specific solubility information is available for this alpha-phase product.

      Helpful?

  5. Where can I find other Silicon- or Carbon-based materials?

    1 answer
    1. Sigma-Aldrich offers a wide variety of Silicon-, Carbon-, and other metal-based ceramic materials.

      Helpful?

  6. What is the Department of Transportation shipping information for this product?

    1 answer
    1. Transportation information can be found in Section 14 of the product's (M)SDS.To access the shipping information for this material, use the link on the product detail page for the product.

  7. What applications can Product 378097, Silicon carbide, be used for?

    1 answer
    1. Silicon carbide (SiC) has found use in a variety of commercial applications. Historically, SiC has been used most frequently in the metallurical, abrasive, and refactory industries. More recently, this material has found increased use in high technology applications (e.g. electronics, aerospace, automotive, etc.).
