血管内皮生长因子（VEGF）基因位于人类染色体6p21.3上，被认为编码四种不同的同工酶。它通过三种受体发出信号；Fms样酪氨酸激酶（flt-1），KDR基因产物（KDR的鼠同源物是flk-1基因产物）和flt4基因产物。该蛋白质在血管化组织中表达。
该基因是 PDGF/VEGF 生长因子家族的成员，编码的蛋白质通常以二硫键连接的同源二聚体形式存在。该蛋白是一种糖基化的丝裂原，专门作用于内皮细胞，具有多种作用，包括介导血管通透性增加、诱导血管生成、血管生成和内皮细胞生长、促进细胞迁移和抑制细胞凋亡。这种蛋白质水平升高与 POEMS 综合征有关，也称为 Crow-Fukase 综合征。该基因的突变与增殖性和非增殖性糖尿病视网膜病变有关。可编码自由分泌或细胞相关亚型的选择性剪接转录变体已被表征。也有证据表明在第一个 AUG 的上游使用非 AUG (CUG) 翻译起始位点，并与第一个 AUG 同框，可导致额外的同种型。（RefSeq 提供）
