半乳凝素-3蛋白包括一个N-末端弹性域和一个C-末端碳水化合物识别域 (CRD)。它位于人染色体14q22.3。半乳凝素-3在感觉神经元、免疫内皮和上皮细胞中表达。

生化／生理作用
半乳凝素-3（Gal3）具有抗细胞凋亡性质，并介导癌细胞与内皮的粘附。乳糖会抑制半乳凝素-3的活性。高水平的Gal3与心血管疾病有关，并且是心力衰竭相关纤维化和炎症中的潜在生物标志物。Gal3与多种生物活动有关，包括从分化到宿主防御和免疫调节。Gal3基因缺失与肾功能异常（如肾病）有关联。它与视网膜病和非酒精性脂肪性肝病（NAFLD）的发病机制有关。
半乳糖凝集素-3与癌症的细胞凋亡抑制和进展有关，也是炎症的一种调节因子。研究发现半乳糖凝集素-3的表达与结肠癌、肝癌和甲状腺癌的致瘤性和转移呈正相关。
其他說明
半乳糖凝集素-3是动物凝集素家族的一员，可选择性地结合β-g半乳糖苷残基。
