Description générale

Ceramide is a sphingolipid with long acyl chain attached to a fatty. It is synthesized in the endoplasmic reticulum by ceramide synthase.[1]

Actions biochimiques/physiologiques

Ceramide functions as a secondary messenger to initiate apoptosis.[2] It also regulates physiological processes and is accountable for the epidermal permeability barrier in eukaryotic membranes.[3]
