Descripción general

Proguanil hydrochloride is a biguanide compound,[1] widely used as an antimalarial drug.[2] It exhibits sporontocidal activity, thereby rendering the gametocytes non-infective to the mosquito vector.[1]
Pharmaceutical secondary standards for application in quality control provide pharma laboratories and manufacturers with a convenient and cost-effective alternative to the preparation of in-house working standards.

Aplicación

Proguanil hydrochloride may be used as a pharmaceutical reference standard for the quantification of the analyte in pharmaceutical formulations using high-performance liquid chromatography.[2]

Acciones bioquímicas o fisiológicas

Chlorguanide (proguanil) is combined with atovaquone for malaria prophylaxis. The two compounds act synergistically to inhibit the plasmodial dihydrofolate reductase (DHFR) and interrupt the electron transport chain. Mutations in DHFR account for the development of resistant strains.
