3,4-Dihydro-β-carbolines (DHβCs) are a set of endogenously synthesized alkaloids spread over a great variety of living species (e.g., plants, animals and microorganisms), playing a broad spectrum of biological, biochemical and/or pharmacological roles, in a structure-dependent manner. Addressing unresolved fundamental aspects

The ethological spectrum of four beta-carbolines was studied for intraspecific aggression, sociability integration and individual behavior. It was established that beta-carboline-3-carboxyethyl ether given at subconvulsant doses increases aggression, lowers sociability as a diazepam antagonist. Diazepam reduces aggression and increases sociability.
Synaptic adhesion molecules, including presynaptic neurexins (NRXNs) and post-synaptic leucine-rich repeat transmembrane (LRRTM) proteins are important for development and maintenance of brain neuronal networks. NRXNs are probably the best characterized synaptic adhesion molecules, and one of the major presynaptic organizer

Several commercial and novel synthetic β-carbolines (βCs) were evaluated for their antiviral activity against herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) using an adapted MTS assay. Of 21 drugs tested, although 11 exerted antiviral activity at non-cytotoxic concentrations, only 3 of
