General description

215 amino acids; comprises two homologous HMG boxes, rich in basic amino acids, and an acidic tail at the carboxy-terminus
HMG-1 (high mobility group protein) is a nuclear protein of molecular weight 30kDa. It is secreted from macrophages, monocytes and necrotic cells.[1] It is ubiquitously expressed. The protein has basic HMG (high mobility group) box domains and an acidic carboxyl-terminus.[2]

Application

HMG-1 (high-mobility-group protein) human has been used:
  • to prepare a standard curve for measuring HMG1 using ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) test[3][3]
  • to study the apoptotic ratios of Lewis cells in presence of exogenous HMG-1[4]
  • to study the changes in Th (T helper)-17 cell expansion in the presence of HMG-1 under in vitro conditions[5]
  • for the migration assay of GM7373 cells[6]

Biochem/physiol Actions

HMG-1 (high mobility group protein) is a non-histone chromosomal protein, which promotes the sequence specific DNA attachment of proteins. HMG1 binds DNA in a non-sequence specific manner.[7] It is involved in DNA replication, transcription and repair. In addition, it is up-regulated in cancers and is associated with cellular growth, vasculogenesis and apoptosis regulation.[8] In the presence of infection or injury, HMG1 is secreted and mediates inflammation.[9] It is associated with the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE).[1]
