General description

PVA is a water soluble biocompatible polymer. It minimizes protein adsorption on its surface due to steric stabilization effect, unique solution properties and molecular conformation in aqueous form. The steric repulsion occurs due to osmotic pressure and elastic restoring forces competing with the van der Waal′s attraction between water soluble polymers and protein.

Application

PVA is used:
  • In the cell collection medium for determining cellular function of mouse oocytes and eggs cells.
  • As a coating and stabilizer in the preparation of drug loaded microparticles.
  • In the preparation of biocompatible polymer blends of chitosan and poly (vinyl) alcohol.
  • In the synthesis of bioactive polymer blends of poly(lactic acid)/poly(vinyl-alcohol)-chitosan.
  • In developing chitosan-polyvinyl alcohol-bioactive glass composite membranes.

  1. How is the PVA made? What is the initiator used?

    1. This product is made from Poly(vinyl acetate). It is approximately 80 percent hydrolyzed, meaning that about 80 percent of the oxygen in this polymer is in form of the free secondary alcohol, and 20 percent of the oxygen in this polymer is in the form of the acetate ester. Further information on how the PVA is made, such as the initiator used to make the Poly(vinyl acetate) and how the majority of the esters are hydrolyzed, is considered proprietary.

  2. What is the maximum solubility of this product in water? In the past I achieved 10 wt% but I assume there is a higher limit.

    1. The maximum solubility of this material in water has not been investigated. Viscosity testing is performed at 4%, in general. Low molecular weight and minimally hydrolyzed PVA are more soluble. This product has a molecular weight range of 8000 - 10,000 Da and is approximately 80% hydrolyzed. Both values are comparatively low.

  3. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
      For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
      For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

  4. How is shipping temperature determined? And how is it related to the product storage temperature?

    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers.
