General description

Aluminum chloride may be manufactured by chlorination of liquid aluminum in ceramic lined reaction vessels at 600-700oC.

Application

High strength steel has been coated electrochemically by Al in an acidic ionic liquid composed of 1-ethyl -3- methylimidazolium chloride and AlCl3. AlCl3 may be used to form Al-Cd alloy. Anhydrous alumunium chloride is a catalyst in organic chemistry especially for Friedel-Crafts reactions. It may also be used as a nucleation agent in the production of TiO2 pigment by the chloride process.

Features and Benefits

The vapor-phase co-reductions with other metal halides by hydrogen results in finely divided intermetallics with applications as structural materials or compounds with useful thermoelectric, magnetic, and oxidation-resistance properties. Aluminum nitride can be synthesized from the elemnts with AlCl3 added to help facilitate crystallization.
