Descripción general

The product is 40wt.% solution of glyoxal in water. Glyoxal is a linear aliphatic dialdehyde containing two aldehyde groups.[1] It participates in the synthesis of glyoxylic acid. It is highly reactive in nature. It can be prepared by oxidizing ethanol or acetaldehyde with nitric acid. It is widely employed in textile and paper industry.[2]

Aplicación

Glyoxal solution has been used as a crosslinking agent during the synthesis of DNA-containing nanoparticles in a study.[3] It has been used as derivatizing reagent, in the precolumn fluorescence derivatization of N-terminal tryptophan containing peptides which can be separated via high performance liquid chromatography.[4] It may also be used in the synthesis of glyoxal bis(4-phenyl-3-thiosemicarbazones)solution, which can be used in the spectrophotometric determination of palladium in catalysts.[5]

  1. How can I determine the shelf life / expiration / retest date of this product?

    1. If this product has an expiration or retest date, it will be shown on the Certificate of Analysis (COA, CofA). If there is no retest or expiration date listed on the product's COA, we do not have suitable stability data to determine a shelf life. For these products, the only date on the COA will be the release date; a retest, expiration, or use-by-date will not be displayed.
      For all products, we recommend handling per defined conditions as printed in our product literature and website product descriptions. We recommend that products should be routinely inspected by customers to ensure they perform as expected.
      For products without retest or expiration dates, our standard warranty of 1 year from the date of shipment is applicable.

    1. Products may be shipped at a different temperature than the recommended long-term storage temperature. If the product quality is sensitive to short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped on wet or dry-ice. If the product quality is NOT affected by short-term exposure to conditions other than the recommended long-term storage, it will be shipped at ambient temperature. As shipping routes are configured for minimum transit times, shipping at ambient temperature helps control shipping costs for our customers.   3. What are the storage conditions of the 100G package size supplied in a single 125 mL bottle?

    1. This product may be stored at room temperature. Note that any precipitates that may appear upon long term storage may be dissolved by warming the material to 50-60 °C.

  5. Hello, for the Glyoxal solution 40% (128465) it is described "This form of glyoxal is composed of 3 moles of glyoxal and 2 moles of water..." What does it mean? If glyoxal solution is 40% the molar ratio glyoxal:water should be 1:5. Best regards Maja

    1. Product 128465 concentration is ~40% wt % in H2O which is 40 g of solid divided by 100 g of water and ~8.8 M (Moles/L). Please be mindful that the moles represent a different unit of measurement than weight percent and molarity and their ratios will vary as moles do not represent the concentration of the solution. A mole is defined as the amount of a substance that contains exactly 6.0221023 elementary entities of the given substance. 2 moles of water molecules are needed to stabilize 3 moles of glyoxal molecules as pure glyoxal is not commonly encountered since solid glyoxal around room temperature is a yellow liquid that gives off a green vapor. Commercially, it is usually handled as a 40% aqueous solution (density near 1.24 g/mL).

  6. Hello, Is there a straightforward way to get this solution of glyoxal into the gas phase so that it can be introduced into an atmospheric simulation chamber for the purpose of testing developmental gas sensing systems? Kind regards, Eibhlín

    1. Information regarding the vapor pressure of the glyoxal cannot be provided. The conditions required for volatilization are unknown. It may be possible to begin by making an aerosol, using a bottle-type sprayer, see Product Z126306-1SET for example:
