Descripción general

Phosphatidylethanolamine is an aminophospholipid. It is present in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. Phosphatidylethanolamine is one of the most abundant glycerophospholipids in the biological membranes. It is found in nervous tissue.

Aplicación

C18(Plasm)-18:1 PE has been used as a lipid standard in the optimization of the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS).

Acciones bioquímicas o fisiológicas

Phosphatidylethanolamine forms pure lipid structures, which regulate membrane fluidity in eukaryotic cells. Phosphatidylethanolamine plays a major role in autophagy, cell division and protein folding. It functions as a precursor for the synthesis of various protein modifications. Phosphatidylethanolamine acts as an intermediate for the synthesis of glycerophospholipid classes.

Misfolding of the prion protein (PrP) plays a central role in the pathogenesis of infectious, sporadic, and inherited prion diseases. Here we use a chemically defined prion propagation system to study misfolding of the pathogenic PrP mutant D177N in vitro.

Prions containing misfolded prion protein (PrP(Sc)) can be formed with cofactor molecules using the technique of serial protein misfolding cyclic amplification. However, it remains unknown whether cofactors materially participate in maintaining prion conformation and infectious properties. Here we show that

The conformational conversion of the cellular prion protein (PrP(C)) to the β-rich infectious isoform PrP(Sc) is considered a critical and central feature in prion pathology. Although PrP(Sc) is the critical component of the infectious agent, as proposed in the "protein-only"
