Biochem./physiol. Wirkung

ETS domain-containing protein Elk-1 is a protein encoded by the ELK1 gene in humans. It is a member of the Ets family of transcription factors. Elk-1 activation is important for executing its physiologic functions. Its activation is positively associated with ER and with Cyclin D1. Elk1 plays a novel role in controlling cell migration. Elk-1 is involved in a number of important cell processes through the activation of different genes in a number of normal tissues as well as in many malignancies. It is also plays a role in breast neoplasia.

Eukaryotic transcription factors are grouped into families and, due to their similar DNA binding domains, often have the potential to bind to the same genomic regions. This can lead to redundancy at the level of DNA binding, and mechanisms are

Elk-1 is a member of the Ets family of transcription factors, which are identified by a conserved Ets DNA-binding domain that mediates transcriptional regulation at Ets sequence--containing promoters. The activation domain of Elk-1 is important for executing its physiologic functions
