General description

Adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) ist ein 303 Aminosäuren langes Hormonprotein, das auf dem menschlichen Chromosom 2p23.3 lokalisiert ist.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Stimuliert die Synthese und Absonderung von Glukokortikoiden durch die Nebennierenrinde.

Adrenocorticotropin (ACTH) stimuliert den Melanocortinrezeptor (MC1R bis MC5R). Es ist an der Produktion von α-Melanozyten-stimulierendem Hormon (α-MSH) beteiligt. Eine Hypomethylierung der ACTH-Promotorregion in thymischen Karzinoiden steht mit ektopischem Cushing-Syndrom in Zusammenhang. Mutationen dieses Gens stehen mit aberrantem Fusionsprotein und einer Beeinträchtigung der Melanocortinsignalisierung bei Nebennierenrindeninsuffizienz in Verbindung. Eine Fehlregulierung von ACTH führt zu Cushing-Syndrom.
