Ações bioquímicas/fisiológicas

CAMK4 (Calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase IV) is a multifunctional serine/threonine protein kinase belonging to the CaMK family. It is a Ca²⁺ sensor molecule that enters the nucleus via the adapter protein importin-α interactions. It binds to and activates the calcium response-element binding (CREB) protein by phosphorylation for regulating the gene transcription. It can also control the alternate splicing by interacting with ribonuclear protein L. In hippocampus and cerebellum of the CNS (Central nervous system) responsible for long-term depression (LTD), dendritic growth, and the acquisition of memories are regulated by CAMK4. It also essentially controls the phosphorylation of protamines during spermatogenesis, in terms of, controlling human sperm motility. Thus, mutation in CAMK4 causes infertility in men due to abnormal semen activity.
