General description

Native mucin from bovine submaxillary gland. A high molecular weight glycoprotein that is the major constituent of saliva, gastrointestinal juices, and other secretions. Mucin exists as an aggregated complex in excess of 106 molecular weight. It is a rich source of O-linked oligosaccharide chains and it is suitable as a substrate for neuraminidase.

Preparation Note

Following reconstitution, refrigerate (4°C).

Questions

1–2 of 2 Questions
  1. How much sialic acid is bound to mucin (item 499643)?

    1 answer
    1. This product is prepared by the method of Nisizawa K. and Pigman W., 1959, Arch. Oral Biol. 1, 161-70, "The composition and properties of the Mucin Clot from Cattle Sub-maxillary glands". Briefly, the bovine submaxillary glands are blended in a phosphate buffer; following filtration, the material is centrifuged, and the precipitated material is resuspended and is dialyzed before lyophilization. It should contain about 74% protein, 12.8% sialic acid, 8.1% galactosamine, and 3.4% glucosamine.
