Descripción general

GC methods are divided into two classes depending on the nature of stationary phases; gas-solid chromatography (GSC) and gas-liquid chromatography (GLC). GSC has solid adsorptive material and solute particles are removed from mobile phase by electrostatic forces. GLC has a thin layer of liquid coated or bonded on the surface of an inert particle or on the walls of the column where solute particles are retained in the liquid phase based on their partition coefficients.[1] The primary necessity of a stationary phase is to provide sample separation sustaining phase integrity over a reasonable period of time. It should be stable for the chemical and thermal changes. Selectivity, peak symmetry, analysis time, degree of separation, peak tailing are few parameters to consider for choosing a stationary phase.[2] Polyethyleneimine (PEI) is suitable for protein separation. It binds insistently to negative charged stationary phase.[3] It is a pseudostationary phase which is also a cationic polymer.[4]
Synthesized specifically to be purer, of narrow molecular weight range, and without trace catalysts or impurities for use as a GC stationary phase.

The effect of methanol and acetonitrile, respectively, on the separation of neutral compounds (benzyl alcohol, phenols) is investigated in electrokinetic chromatographic (EKC) systems consisting of polyethyleneimine (PEI) as charged, polymeric, replaceable pseudostationary phase. Questions

1–4 of 4 Questions
  1. What are the specifications for Product 21195-U, Polyethyleneimine?

    1 answer
    1. The polyethyleneimine, Supelco 21195-U, is made from Aldrich 181978.  Supelco purifies the PEI to use as a GC phase; it is commonly solvated with acetone for use in the manufacturing of packings for gas chromatography columns.  It exists as a thick, clear, colorless, odorless liquid at room temperature.

  2. What is the molecular weight of Polyethyleneimine, Product 21195-U?

    1 answer
    1. The molecular weight distribution of the polyethyleneimine: average Mn ~60,000 by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), average Mw ~750,000 by light scattering (ELSD; evaporative light scattering detection).

  3. Do you know the pKa of polyethyleneimine?

    1 answer
    1. The nitrogens in polyethyleneimine (PEI) are mainly in tertiary amines. PEI has a pKa of approximately 5.9.
