General description

Muscimol is a psychoactive isoxazole component, which is found in Amanita muscaria and related mushrooms.[1] It lowers cerebral glucose metabolism and increases the level of 5-hydroxytryptamine in brain.[2][3] Muscimol has hallucinogenic effects.[3] It is associated with distorted perceptions, nausea and vomiting.[4]

Application

Muscimol has been used:
  • to reduce conditioned fear-expression in lateral amygdala (LA)[5]
  • to eliminate cortical cell response in ferrets[6]
  • to inactivate lateral magnocellular nucleus of the nidopallium (LMAN) in zebra finches[7]
