General description

Horse serum displays homogeneity between fetal bovine serum and fetal calf serum .It has low levels of polyamine oxidase.[1]
Horse serum is pooled from a normal donor herd.

Application

Horse serum has been used as a supplement in minimum essential medium for cerebrocortical neuronal−glial cell cultures[2] and RPMI-40 medium for PC12 cells derived from rat adrenal medulla pheochromocytoma.[3] It has also been used in immunohistochemistry of Florida manatee brain sections.[4]
Normal horse serum may be used as a blocking agent and controls in immunoassays. For immunohistochemistry and immunocytochemistry, 10% horse serum was used as blocking agent in various Studies.[5][6][7][8][9]
Horse serum was used in immunostaining for blocking non-specific antibodies binding.[10]

Biochem/physiol Actions

The horse serum is an alternative to bovine serum for growth factors and hormones for cell culture studies.[11] Horse serum stimulates fibroblast differentiation and extracellular matrix (ECM) and cytokines synthesis.[11]

Leukocytes are critical mediators of endometrial remodeling, but the mechanisms by which leukocyte subpopulations enter the uterus are currently unknown. Endometrial leukocytes have no genomic progesterone receptors; thus, we hypothesized that leukocyte migration is induced indirectly by progesterone-regulated chemokines. Fractalkine
