General description

Ghrelin is a gastric acyl-peptide[1] or an orexigenic digestive hormone.[2] It is synthesized by the ghrelin producing cells in the gastric oxyntic mucosa.[3] GHRL gene is mapped to human chromosome 3p25-p26.[4]

Application

Ghrelin human has been used to study the influence of leptin and ghrelin on secretory function of equine corpus luteum (CL) in vitro.[5]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Endogenous ligand to the orphan growth-hormone secretagogue receptor that stimulates the release of growth hormone from the pituitary.
Ghrelin participates in cell proliferation.[1] It plays a major role in sleep and memory. Ghrelin is also associated with depression, especially for particular endophenotypes.[2] It promotes growth hormone (GH) release in central nervous system.[3]
