General description

Basic Red 9 (BR9) is a triphenylmethane dye, employed in textile, leather, paper, ink industries, for staining bacteria, antibody, in Feulgen reaction and Gomori′s aldehyde-fuchsin method of staining elastic tissues. BR9 is also utilized in the analysis of SO2 and formaldehyde in air and water. Under anaerobic conditions, these dyes can decompose into carcinogenic aromatic amines and thus reported to be toxic to the environment.[1][2][3]

Application

Basic Red 9 may be used as an analytical standard for the determination of the analyte in toys by LC,coupled to UV/Vis spectrometry and tandem mass spectrometry,[3] foodstuffs by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry[4] and wastewater using polyurethane foam functionalized with tannic acid.[5]
