General description

Safingol is a lysosphingolipid and a synthetic L-threo-stereoisomer of (D-erythro-) sphinganine.[1][2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Safingol is a competitive inhibitor of sphingosine kinase 1 involved in cancer cell growth and proliferation. It is known to increase antitumor activity of cisplatin in xenograft experiments.[3]
