General description

4-Methylphenol is an isomer of the phenolic compound, named cresol. It can be formed via action of colonic bacteria on tyrosine and phenylalanine in human body. It can act like a an odorant and a component of human sweat, which can have the tendency to attract female Anopheles mosquitoes, the world′s most important vector of Plasmodium falciparum malaria.

Application

4-Methylphenol can be used in the preparation of toluene via hydrodeoxygenation in the presence of cobalt dispersed on molybdenum disulfide monolayers as catalyst.

High serum levels of p-cresol have been associated with cardiovascular diseases. This study investigated the effects of p-cresol on gap junctions in neonatal cultured cardiomyocytes. p-Cresol reduced the spontaneous contraction rates of cardiomyocytes, and caused irregular cardiomyocyte beating. Junctional connexin
