General description
Sphingomyelin phosphodiesterase-1 (SMPD1) gene encodes for acid sphingomyelinase (aSMase), which is involved in the hydrolysis of sphingomyelin to ceramides and phosphorylcholine in the late endosomes and lysosomes.[1][2] Ceramides act as proinflammatory and proapoptotic second messengers.[2] Mutations in the SMPD1 gene are associated with a lack of aSMase, leading to Niemann-Pick disease type A and B. The SMPD1 gene is mapped to the human chromosome at 11p15.1–11p15.4.[3]
