General description

The Lugol′s solution stabilized with PVP, is a ready-to-use solution used in bacteriology, for example, for the staining of Gram bacteria. It contains a complex of Iodine-Polyvinylpyrrolidon (PVP) and no free iodine, which stabilizes the solution and reduces the evaporation of iodine. During Gram-staining, the iodine from the Lugol′s solution and crystal violet (Cat. no. 109218) form a stable complex that will not be released by decolorisation. Thus, Gram-positive bacteria will appear blue-violet when analyzed microscopically, wheras Gram-negative bacteria can be counterstained with a safranine solution (Product number 1.09217) and will appear pink to red.
1 L of the Lugol′s solution stabilized with PVP is capable of staining up to 500 slides. This product is registered as IVD and CE marked. For more details, please see instructions for use (IFU). The IFU can be downloaded from this webpage.
