General description

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) is a strong bilayer-forming lipid. It the most common phospholipid in mammalian membranes.[1] It is also an important component of the mucosal layer of the colon.[2]
The list of Phosphatidylcholine products offered by Avanti is designed to provide compounds having a variety of physical properties. Products available include short chain (C3-C8 are water soluble and hygroscopic), saturated, multi-unsaturated and mixed acid PC′s. All of the products are purified by HPLC, and special precautions are taken to protect the products for oxidization and hydrolysis.

Application

14:0 PC (DMPC) has been used in liposome preparation.[3] It is also suitable for use:
  • in the preparation of lipid bicelles for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) experiments[4]
  • in labeled vesicle preparation for fluorescence polarization measurements[5]
  • as internal standard (IS) for the quantitation of phosphatidylcholine (PC) by liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS-MS)[6]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Phosphatidylcholine (PC) functions as a surfactant within the mucus to form a hydrophobic surface to inhibit bacterial penetrance.[2] It is used to treat fat embolism. Phosphatidylcholine lowers the levels of cholesterol and triglycerides.[7]
