General description

Iodoform initiates the nascent Cu0-catalyzed living radical polymerization of vinyl chloride. Iodoform paste can be used in root canal therapy for infected primary teeth.

Application

Iodoform was used in thermal analysis and flammability studies of butadiene-acrylonitrile rubber, Perbunan NT 1845 of Bayer, cross-linked with iodoform. It was used to develop an analytical method for simultaneous determination of iodoform, iodoacetic acid and other trihalomethanes in drinking water.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Iodoform is an iodine containing compound, which is used in antiseptic applications in the medical and veterinary medicine fields. Iodoform improves fermentation in the biomass ensilage conversion system by improving lactic acid production and inhibiting butyric fermentation.

This study shows that iodinated organic compounds can be produced when iodide-containing waters are in contact with manganese oxide birnessite (delta-MnO2) in the pH range of 5-7. In the absence of natural organic matter (NOM), iodide is oxidized to iodate
