Application

Dextran sulfate sodium salt from Leuconostoc sp. is a polyanion used as a test reagent for testing its capability to rupture the extracellular enveloped virus (EEV) outer membrane.[1] It has also been used for assessing the impact of TLR4 monoclonal antibody on the growth of dextran-sulfate-sodium-(DSS)-induced colitis.[2]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Dextran is a mixture of glucose polymers of varying size and geometry.Dextran in the form of dextran sulphate sodium acts as an anticoagulant. Dextran interferes with blood clot formation by acting on blood coagulation factors and the function of platelets. It prolongs the time required for formation of the clot and decreases the maximum clot strength.[3][4] The disturbance of homeostasis by dextran may cause increased bleeding, colitis and kidney failure.[5][6]
