General description

Cardiolipin is an anionic phospholipid located in the inner mitochondrial membrane.[1] It constitutes 20% of total lipids.[2] The non-bilayer has four acyl chains and a small head group.[3]

Application

Cardiolipin Mix I has been used as an internal standard in the mass-spectrometric analysis of phospholipids.[4][5][6]

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cardiolipin plays a vital role in the organization of membranes and cell division.[7] It regulates the proton uptake pathway.[3] It contributes to mitochondrial biogenesis, fusion and fission, respiration and protein import.[8] Cardiolipin controls cell wall biogenesis, vacuole homeostasis, aging, cell cycle and apoptosis.[8]
