镁（粉）可用作还原剂以合成：
还可用作还原剂，用于钌(III)络合物催化原子转移自由基加成（ATRA）和环化（ATRC）反应。镁不能产生自由基，但能生成和再生具有催化活性的钌(II)。
- 钛合金氢化物粉末，通过氢气气氛下还原升级钛渣（UGS）。
- 通过球磨法从赤铁矿（α-Fe2O3）制备超细金属铁（bcc-Fe）粉。
